Not So Fine Print: Statutory requirements outlined in Minnesota Statutes 624.714.2 require several steps before a person can apply for their permit to carry in Minnesota. Minnesota residents must apply to the county sheriff where they reside, while nonresidents can apply to any sheriff. Applicants must have training in the safe use of a pistol, be at least 21 years old, complete an application, not be prohibited from possessing a firearm under specified sections, and not be listed in the criminal gang investigative data system. Training must include fundamentals of pistol use, successful completion of a shooting qualification, and instruction on the legal aspects of pistol possession, carry, and use.
Trusted Aim offers the course and does not charge a fee for the live-fire experience. However, the live-fire experience is required, and fees are paid directly to the gun range. These fees vary depending on whether a person owns a firearm or needs to rent one, has their own ammo or needs to purchase it, etc. We don’t make the rules; we just follow them. Application fees to the sheriff are in addition to course and live-fire fees, paid directly to the sheriff’s office in the applicant’s county. These fees are determined by the county sheriff, up to $100 for new permits and $75 for renewals.
