Introduction to Rhythm
This unit introduces Ivory and Sage to the rich cultural heritage of Black music, rhythm, and rhyme. Centered around the theme of Hood Hymns, it explores how music and rhythm are woven into the fabric of Black communities, serving as tools for storytelling, expression, and unity. Through interactive activities, the children will learn about the power of hymns and spirituals, the sounds of their environment, and the role of music in community life. This unit culminates in a special visit to the Kennedy Center, where they will experience and participate in the Hood Hymns feature performance, tying together all they have learned.

The Tale of Big Cap

Big Cap, Big Cap, what’s that you say?
A tale so wild, it blew us away!
He said, “I’ve seen the moon so close,
I touched it with my nose!”

Big Cap, Big Cap, tell us more,
What other tales do you have in store?
“I once rode a whale across the sea,
It was purple with stripes, just like me!”

Big Cap, Big Cap, could that be true?
A whale so big, and purple too?
“Oh yes,” he said with a wink and a grin,
“I saw it dance with a big fat fin!”

Big Cap, Big Cap, we’re not so sure,
Your stories are tall, that’s for sure!
He laughed and twirled his giant hat,
“I tell big tales, imagine that!”

Big Cap, Big Cap, full of cheer,
He made the children laugh and cheer.
“Stories can be big, and wild, and fun,
They make the day bright like the sun!”

So Big Cap told his tales all day,
And the kids all clapped and yelled, “Hooray!”
For even if his tales weren’t true,
They made us smile, me and you!

Big Cap, Big Cap, keep telling your tales,
We’ll follow your stories, like wind in the sails.
For in every cap, there’s a little bit of fun,
And Big Cap’s tales are number one!
