Introduction to Rhythm
This unit introduces Ivory and Sage to the rich cultural heritage of Black music, rhythm, and rhyme. Centered around the theme of Hood Hymns, it explores how music and rhythm are woven into the fabric of Black communities, serving as tools for storytelling, expression, and unity. Through interactive activities, the children will learn about the power of hymns and spirituals, the sounds of their environment, and the role of music in community life. This unit culminates in a special visit to the Kennedy Center, where they will experience and participate in the Hood Hymns feature performance, tying together all they have learned.

Big Cap and His Hats

Big Cap, Big Cap, loves his hats,
Hats of all colors! Mint, Blue, Green even Black.

Sombrero, sombrero, wide and grand,
From sunny Mexico, across the land.
It keeps the sun off Big Cap’s face,
With colors bright, it’s full of grace!

Kangol, Kangol, snug and neat,
Big Cap wears it when he’s on the street.
From the UK, it’s stylish and cool,
Perfect for days when he’s feeling the groove!

Beret, beret, so French and fine,
Big Cap wears it when he’s ready to dine.
It sits on his head, just to the side,
With a croissant and cheese, he wears it with pride!

Fedora, fedora, with a fancy brim,
Big Cap wears it when he’s feeling prim.
It’s sharp and smart, from days of old,
A classic hat, so bold and gold!

Baseball cap, baseball cap, with a little flap,
Big Cap wears it when he’s ready to nap.
It’s sporty and fun, from the USA,
Perfect for games on a sunny day!

Sombrero, Kangol, Beret, Fedora too,
Big Cap loves them all, how about you?
Hats from near, and hats from far,
Each one’s special, like a shining star!

Big Cap, Big Cap, what will you wear?
So many hats, so much flair!
He’ll wear them all, just wait and see,
Each hat tells a story, for you and me!
